Acute pancreatitis is a condition in which the pancreas becomes inflamed (swollen) quickly. The pancreas is a small organ behind the stomach that aids digestion. Most people with acute pancreatitis recover within a week and have no further complications. However, some people with severe acute pancreatitis may develop serious complications. Acute pancreatitis differs from chronic pancreatitis, in which the pancreas has been permanently damaged by inflammation over time. The severity of acute pancreatitis determines the treatment. The risk of complications is low in mild cases, and symptoms may resolve after a few days of rest and treatment. The risk is significant in severe cases. Severe cases frequently involve tissue death, also known as necrosis. This raises the possibility of sepsis, a severe bacterial infection that can affect the entire body. Sepsis can cause organ damage or failure. Hypovolemic shock can also result from severe acute pancreatitis. This causes severe blood and fluid loss, preventing the heart from pumping enough blood to the body. If this happens, parts of the body can quickly run out of oxygen. This is a potentially fatal situation.
