Acute pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas becomes inflamed (swollen) quickly. The pancreas is a small organ located behind the stomach that helps with digestion. The majority of people suffering from acute pancreatitis recover within a week and have no further complications. Some people with severe acute pancreatitis, on the other hand, may develop serious complications.
